On August 31, 2010, five girls from Mercy Academy completed their first Youth in Action Event called Sticker Shock. The girls took the initiative to contact and gain the participation of three local alcohol retailers. They also partnered with the Louisville-Metro Police Department.
Together the youth and three adults, including one law enforcement officer, placed about 2,500 mini-labels onto multi-packs of beer encouraging adults not to provide alcohol to youth. The stickers contained messages to parents and other adults; such as, alcohol's dangerous impact on the developing teen brain; the fact that 65% of youth obtain alcohol from their own home encouraging adults to lock it, dump it, or track it; and a warning to adults that if they provide alcohol to a minor is an unlawful transaction punishable by up to a $500 fine and a year in jail.
The youth are soon planning to represent MADD's Youth in Action Program at a presentation to the KY Licensing and Occupation Committee meant to increase the legislators knowledge of the danger of Alco-pops, sweet flavored malt beverages and alcoholic energy drinks, which mask the taste of alcohol and are frequently popular with young teen girls.
