The youth in Gallatin County wasted absolutely no time in planning their first project. Nine high school students with the help of their local Sheriff's Department conducted their first project only about a month after their training.Gallatin County YIA member Sticker Shock occurred at one supermarket and one liquor store in Warsaw, KY. The youth placed 1,056 warning labels on multi-packs of beer to remind adults it is their legal and ethical responsibility to keep alcohol away from youth. Even before the last sticker was placed the youth were already asking when they could conduct the project again. Since then, the group has received thousands more labels to position at other alcohol retailers in their community.

The youth in Gallatin County certainly have the right idea that it takes an entire community working together to prevent underage drinking. They have also worked with various local businesses to position signage- posters, table tents, and magnets, in their stores with messages about reducing youth's access to alcohol, and are working with local media to broaden the reach and effectiveness of their efforts.

Gallatin County YIA memberThe Gallatin County Youth in Action Team is supported locally by local Students Against Destructive Decisions Organization, Gallatin County High School, law enforcement, business owners, the Agency for Substance Abuse Prevention, and many others; in addition to the funding, training, and supplies they receive as result of MADD's Enforcing Underage Drinking Laws Grant through the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention and KY State Police.

It's true dedication when young people volunteer their time to spend hours in frigid freezers at 40-degrees to prevent their peers from developing with alcohol addiction, drinking and driving, or suffering permanent injury or even death.
