Sticker Shock

An image of the sticker used during the sticker shock in wet counties, click here to enlargeA sticker shock program is a great awareness project to inform people about the laws surrounding underage drinking. Stickers are designed, developed and then placed on packages of alcohol indicating that it is illegal for adults to purchase alcohol for minors. These stickers can also be placed on the doors and windows of the alcohol displays.

  • The goals of a sticker shock program:
  • Create awareness about laws concerning underage drinking
  • Establish a relationship with retail stores
  • Publicize your group's activities
  • Timeline
  • After obtaining permission from distributors or stores and acquiring the stickers, organizing sticker shock shouldn't take more than a week or two to complete.

  • How to carry out a sticker shock program:
  • Contact the MADD KY State Office to arrange training for youth and adults to conduct this and other Youth in Action Projects (1-800-944-6233 or tara.mcguire@madd.org). This training is free, and required of all new Youth in Action Teams.
  • Determine a time and date for the project.
  • Invite law enforcement to participate (At least one law enforcement officer must be present with youth to conduct this project)
  • Invite Retailers: Call or visit in-person individual stores to obtain the manager or owner's permission to place small stickers on beer mutli-packs, and/or large stickers on freezer doors or store windows
  • Order Stickers from the MADD KY State Office (Contact 1-800-944-6233 or tara.mcguire@madd.org).
  • Invite the media: Send out a press release at least one week prior to the event. Follow-up with a phone call to reporters two days prior to the event.
  • Reconfirm with youth participants, law enforcement, and retailers two days before the project
  • Be respectful and courteous when working inside a place of business
  • Ask to speak with the manager or store owner before placing any stickers
  • When placing stickers DO NOT cover up the Surgeon General's warning, UPC bar code, and the brand name/logo. Youth may touch the sticker to place it on the beer multi-pack, but are not to physically touch the alcohol. If alcohol must be moved, an adult or law enforcement office must move it.
  • Thank the retailer as you leaving the store, and pickup all trash.
  • Follow up:
  • Send thank you notes to stores/distributor
  • Send press release and photographs to media informing them of group's activities and explain the purpose of the project A sticker shock program is an easy way to create awareness in your community. This project is also one that can be carried out by younger students who might not be able to be involved with other projects conducted by your group.
